Professor Dr. med. Rolf Winter, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology

Professor Dr. med. Rolf Winter is a well known expert in clinical and surgical ophthalmology.

He has been chief consultant and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the eye clinic of the MHH since 1993.

Professor Winter is the inventor of several new, innovative treatments in the field of ocular microsurgery, and he and his team have developed new surgical strategies which today are the standard treatment in many facilities.

Professor Winter is an active member of numerous ophthalmologic societies.

Clinical Profile

Treatment at the highest possible level is provided at the Department of Ophthalmology for all types of anterior and posterior segment ophthalomological diseases.

The eye clinic of the MHH is both nationally and internationally especially renowned for the treatment of corneal and retinal disorders.

The Department also maintains its own cornea bank, with the DGFG.
The MHH is one of the largest and most experienced centres in Germany for organ and tissue transplantation.

The Department of Ophthalmology and the cornea bank combine great competence in  preparation, surgery and aftercare of corneal transplantations.
The therapeutic repertoir of the eye clinic also includes other innovative treatments such as UVA corneal crosslinking.

The Department of Ophthalomogy is a centre for the treatment of:

• Retinal disorders
• Corneal pathologies
• Glaucoma
• Cataracts
• Age-related macular degeneration
• Diabetic retinopathy

The team of Professor Winter’s Department consists of 20 highly-trained ophthalomogists and more than 40 nurses.
The level of competence is extremely high in all fields of modern ophthalmology, including electrophysiology of the eye.

Since 1993, Professor Winter and his team have conducted research on all aspects of conservative and surgical ophthalmology, especially in these areas:

• Ophthalmic microsurgery
• Long-term organ culture, especially cryoconservation of the cornea
• Amniotic membrane transplantation
• Electrophysiological diagnostics, especially multifocal ERG and VEP
• Dry eye syndrome
• RPE transplantation
• Glaucoma and hypertonia
